Bitsie Tulloch dishes on a highly anticipated showdown

In this interview, Bitsie talked about Juliette’s reason for keeping her secret from Nick and a highly anticipated upcoming showdown between Juliette and a certain blond Hexenbiest.

How would you defend Juliette’s decision to confide in Renard but not Nick?

I think it makes sense. I think her gut reaction is, she knows Nick’s mortal enemy is the Hexenbiest, and he’s a Grimm and now she’s a Hexenbiest. She doesn’t even want to look at him because she can’t control it. She doesn’t know what’s going on; she doesn’t know when she’s going to morph. So she needed to go to somebody who had the same affliction, so to speak—and the only person who really understood her is Sean Renard. And they have a little bit of a history because of everything that happened in season two with the love triangle, and they’re close enough that she would go to him.

Also, she wanted to go to him anyway, because she’s sort of blaming him indirectly because it was his mother who set the ball rolling on this whole issue with the Hexenbiest. [Renard’s mom] is the one who did the spell, and she had warned Juliette and everybody else that there might be side effects. But obviously Juliette would never have ever done this if she had known she was going to turn into a Hexenbiest. She did it because she thought her lover, Nick, would be happier getting his powers back, and she also did it more immediately because Rosalee and Monroe were being threatened. But at the end of the day, it just completely uprooted her entire existence. She doesn’t even know who she is anymore. So she goes to Sean being like, “Your mom did this, call her and have her fix this.”

Do you personally think Juliette made the right decision?

I think it makes sense that she did that. Nick might just launch into Grimm mode and kill her. She doesn’t understand what’s going on with her enough; she doesn’t really understand how powerful she is. She’s incredibly powerful. One of the things that comes up is the fact that the Hexebiests who are made and not born are extremely dangerous and extremely powerful. She has no idea how to control it, so quite frankly, she’s scared she’ll kill him or [Nick] will kill her. So in that sense, it really does make sense that for the time being she’s trying to avoid him.

Has it been fun to portray Hexenbiest-Juliette?

It’s been really, really fun. I was so excited when I first saw that’s where they were going to sort of take her character. … You know, what’s so fun about this new storyline is the question of, is she going to use this newfound power for good or for evil? And what kind of situations is she going to find herself in? She already killed the guy from the Tribunal with her powers, and she’s obviously incredibly badass with this thing. It’s pretty intense, and I don’t think anyone really knows how to help her. It won’t be something that’s easily solved.

I think I can probably say, without giving anything away, that basically the thing that all the fans have been waiting for, for four years, is a catfight between Adalind and Juliette. How great is that going to be when it’s Hexenbiest on Hexenbiest? That’ll happen, and that’ll be awesome. It’s definitely been a really fun storyline.

At first it was bittersweet: One of the reasons I always loved [Juliette] is because she was the only series regular who wasn’t a cop and wasn’t wesen. And so I always really liked playing Juliette because I was like, well this is how the audience would be looking at all this crazy stuff happening if they were just plopped into this world. But now obviously she is wesen. It’s just fun for me going through it.

What else can you tell us about a potential showdown between Juliette and Adalind?

That’s coming up sooner than later. The fans really seem to like the new Hexenbiest Juliette. I think they’re really, really, really going to love that showdown. Because we’ve really been waiting four seasons for a showdown. Adalind has been making Juliette’s life miserable since season one. She’s not just your gun-toting veterinarian who’s threatening but maybe not that threatening—now she’s über threatening and dangerous.

If Juliette can’t find a cure, could a relationship between her and Nick ever work?

As I said before, Hexenbiests are the mortal enemies of Grimm, and I think it would be really hard for them to be able to conduct a relationship with that kind of stuff going on. I think the most immediate thing for her is going to be getting back to normal. And if she can’t, she doesn’t really have a choice except to embrace it.

We met a new character in the last episode, Henrietta, who Juliette is hoping can help her. Is she someone Juliette should trust, or does she have ulterior motives?

Right now I would say she’s pretty ambiguous, as to whether [Henrietta’s] helpful or she’s hurtful. Does she have Juliette’s best interest in mind or is there something else in play? … Do we even trust Sean Renard at the end of the day? And Sean Renard sent Juliette to see Henrietta. So, here we think Capt. Renard is so trustworthy; maybe he’s not.

Is there anything you can tease about what’s coming up for Juliette?

It’s a pretty big tease that the witch fight between Adalind and Juliette is coming up sooner than later, and also Juliette isn’t going to be able to keep her secret from Nick forever. It’s pretty dramatic when he finds out.
